Description:
In ancient Sumerian writings, the Anunnaki were described as a group of deities descended from An, the god of the heavens, and Ki, the goddess of Earth. The translation of Anunnaki roughly translates to “Those of princely progeny
The Anunnaki are often depicted as humanoid but extremely tall. They were said to wear melam, an ambiguous substance that cloaked them in a ‘terrifying splendor.’ When witnessed by humans, melam was said to cause a tingling sensation in the flesh, referred to as ni in Sumerian. They were often depicted wearing horned caps with numerous pairs of ox horns (common with depictions of Mesopotamian dieties), as well as elaborate decorative robes adorned with silver and gold ornaments.
Their purpose varied, in the myth Enki and the World Order, they were the deciders of fate for humanity, while in the Epic of Gilgamesh they are said to be gods of the underworld. The Anunnaki were not usually worshipped collectively; instead having cults and temples dedicated to individual Anunnaki, of which there were potentially up to 600.
However with the rise of ancient alien theories from the 1960s onwards, the Sumerian writings have been cited as evidence of extraterrestrial visitors guiding or controlling humanity since ancient times. They often get referenced alongside biblical sources such as the Watchers from the Book of Enoch; Angels who disobeyed God by teaching mankind forbidden knowledge and procreating with mortal women who then gave birth to Nephilim. The Nephilim were violent destructive giants, who were destroyed by God in a flood in retaliation, and the Watchers were confined to Tartarus.

Various Sumerian art and myth (Prehistory)
Most reference of the Anunnaki date back to ancient Sumer, the earliest writings date back to the Post-Akkadian period. Most reference to them is in writing, there are no known depictions of the Anunnaki as a group, only as individual dieties. Statues and carvings are often misrepresented as Anunnaki, and it is extremely difficult to identify depictions of them due to many of them being prehistoric and lacking necessary context.
